Agricultural Engineering Research
Research Objectives
Conduct research experiments with regards to conventional, sprinkler and drip irrigations so as to develop an efficient and appropriate water management technology to improve water-use-efficiency both under conventional and modern irrigation techniques.
Evaluate various pressurized irrigation systems in sugarcane agriculture with respect to its hydraulic performance, uniformity in water distribution, water use efficiency and its economic feasibility.
To increase fertilizer-use-efficiency through fertigation technique (solid soluble/ liquid fertilizers) through drip and raingun sprinkler irrigation systems.
Evaluation of different micro-irrigation systems for intercropping in sugarcane based farming system.
Design and development of appropriate agricultural drainage systems for reclamation of problematic soils.
Design, development and field-testing of multipurpose earthing up equipment and ratoon management implement.
Demonstrations and field trials of mechanical sugarcane harvester developed jointly by M/s. Rane Agro, VSI, and ICAR.

Recommended system in Sugarcane
Surface Drip irrigation with Pressure compensating emitters and Inline Drip system with pressure compensation.
     
Raingun sprinkler irrigation system was effective in sugarcane crop to increase the cane yield by 21%, saving of irrigation water by 32% and increase in water-use-efficiency by 1.80 times compared to furrow irrigation.
The mechanical sugarcane cutter planter developed by VSI is found suitable for the planting in furrow spacing of 0.90 mtr., 1.20 mtr., 1.50 mtr. and paired row spacing of 0.90 - 1.80 mtr. with more than 72% germination and 48.05% saving in the cost of planting in comparison with conventional manual planting.

Recommendations
Following recommendations of Agriculture Engineering section are released through Joint AGRESCO meeting of all state agricultural universities -
2013-14
Application of 70% of recommended dose of NPK in the form of Urea, Phosphoric acid (61% P2O5) and Muriate of Potash respectively in thirteen equal splits starting from planting at an interval of 15 days up to 6 months through drip irrigation is recommended for higher productivity and monetary returns in pre-seasonal and ratoon sugarcane.

2011-12
A sett treatment of acetobacter @ 3lit. /ha, application of 10% N and 70% P through DAP briquettes in two equal splits at planting and earthing up and 25% N and 70% K through urea and muriate of Potash respectively, in twelve equal splits starting at planting at an interval of fortnight through drip irrigation is recommended for higher productivity and monetary returns of suru sugarcane.
2009-10
Intercropping of Lady’s finger in suru sugarcane in paired row method (90 – 180 cm) under Rain gun sprinkler irrigation system for higher yield & monetary returns is recommended.
2008-09
The mechanical sugarcane planter is recommended for planting in furrow spacing of 0.90 mtr., 1.20 mtr., 1.50 mtr. and paired row spacing of 0.90 - 1.80 mtr. to get more than 72% germination with 48.05% saving in cost of planting in comparison with conventional manual planting.
2007-08
Under drip irrigation system, in medium black soil, the application of FYM @ 25 tons/ha and fertigation of 70% recommended dose of N and K fertilizers in the form of Urea and Muriate of Potash in thirteen equal splits at planting and at an interval of 15 days up to 6 months of crop age along with recommended dose of P in two splits through soil application is recommended in sugarcane crop.
2005-06
75% of recommended dose of chemical fertilizers in the form of Urea, Diammonium Phosphate and Muriate of Potash in four equal splits at planting and at an interval of 45 days up to 4.5 months of crop age through Raingun sprinkler irrigation system is recommended in sugar cane crop.
