Agricultural Engineering - Irrigation Systems and Agricultural Mechanization
Achievements of Agricultural Engineering
Developed various agro-techniques for using drip irrigartion and raingun sprinkler irrigation systems in sugarcane farming for increasing water and fertilizer use efficiency.
Through adaptive research project on "Irrigation Water Management for Sugarcane under Lift Irrigation Schemes" at Rajarambapu Sugar Mill, the concept of irrigation scheduling based on climatological approach and use of cut-throat flumes as flow-measuring devices was successfully implemented on 64 hectare sugarcane area. The result indicated the water saving of 15% along with increase in yield by 17% as compared to conventional flow irrigation.
Developed mechanical sugarcane planter for better germination and saving the planting cost. VSI has transferred the technology of mechanical sugarcane planter with its technical know-how to M/s. Multi–S Engineering Industries, Kolhapur for its manufacturing and marketing from July 2010.

Achievements of the Agricultural Engineering section in the past
Major research projects completed:
Evaluation of different pressurized irrigation systems including raingun sprinkler irrigation.
Irrigation scheduling.
Crop geometry.
Fertigation through drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation.
Evaluation of fanjet irrigation system and raingun sprinkler irrigation system for intercropping in sugarcane.
Moisture conservation.
Cost benefits analysis of different microirrigation systems in sugarcane agriculture.
Design, development and field-testing of mechanical sugarcane planter.
Development of mechanical sugarcane harvester.
